To become a driving instructor in Colorado (known as teaching drivers ed in Colorado), you must due three things. You must complete training, you must pass an examination administered by the Department of Revenue, and you must be hired by a licensed commercial driving school. Unlike some states, if you are not employed by a licensed school, you must surrender your driving instructor certification to the state.

- Must have a valid driver’s license from the state of Colorado
- You must have completed at least 80 hours of formal classroom preparation
- You must pass an examination administered by the department of revenue
